.Russian court: Slain journalist was illegally held
NAZRAN, Russia (AP) - A court in southern Russia has ruled that police illegally detained a journalist who was shot dead while in custody.
Magomed Yevloyev, who was critical of regional officials, ran a Web site that reported on abuses, abductions and killings plaguing the southern Ingushetia province.
Authorities said he was shot in the head in a police car after being detained Aug. 31 as he stepped off a flight from Moscow.
Yevloyev's death prompted outrage and deepened the anger of Ingush residents sympathetic to his biting criticism of authorities in the province bordering Chechnya.
Musa Pliev, who represents Yevloyev's family, said Wednesday that he is pushing for murder charges against police.
