Russia Allows Germany to Transit Military Cargo to Afghanistan Across Its Territory
(Source: Daily News Bulletin; Moscow - English)MOSCOW. Nov 20 (Interfax) - Russia has allowed Germany to transit weapons and military hardware to Afghanistan by rail across its territory, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Andrei Nesterenko has announced.
"This is going to be the first experience of this kind in Russia's relations with foreign countries, taking into account strong cooperation with Germany in tackling common challenges and threats," the diplomat said.
Nesterenko's answers to reporters' questions were posted on the ministry's website on Thursday
The relevant permit was issued by the Federal Customs Service on November 10 following the receipt of a request from the German government.
During Russian-Germany talks in St.Petersburg on October 2, President Dmitry Medvedev and German Chancellor Angela Merkel "highly appraised practical interaction in a bilateral format on the Afghan track, and said it should be expanded," Nesterenko said.
"This involves, in addition to an air bridge used to deliver cargo to the German contingent of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, a railway transit of German military cargo to Afghanistan, as envisioned in the intergovernmental agreement of 2003-04, which remains in effect," he said.
Russia had earlier confirmed it wanted to broaden cooperation with NATO on the Afghanistan track. "This has to do with the transit agreements with Germany, France and other partner-countries which provided contingents to the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan," said Nesterenko.
