Monk, comedian handed lengthy Myanmar prison terms
YANGON, Myanmar (AP) - Courts in military-ruled Myanmar have handed long prison sentences to a prominent monk and a popular comedian active in the country's pro-democracy movement.
Khin Htay Kywe, the lawyer for the comedian and activist Zarganar, says her client was sentenced Friday to 45 years under the country's Electronics Act. The act regulates all forms of electronic communication.
She says that Zarganar still faces other charges.
Another lawyer who asked not to be identified said says Ashin Gambira, a Buddhist monk who helped organize last year's pro-democracy demonstrations, has received a 12-year sentence on various charges Friday.
With a previous prison term of 56 years on other charges, that brings his total sentence to 68 years.
