Winners in Pentagon's 'Pimp My Ride' Contest?
It appears the Pentagon has selected the winners for the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle contest. While the official announcement -- expected last week -- has been postponed, Defense News is reporting that three teams made the cut: a joint venture between General Dynamics and Humvee manufacturer AM General; a Lockheed Martin-BAE Systems team; and Northrop Grumman/Oshkosh Truck.
If the report is correct, it marks a potential victory for Prius-style hybrid designs at the Pentagon: The Northrop-Oshkosh entry is built around a diesel-electric power train. Many observers -- and members of Congress -- have expressed skepticism about the maturity of hybrid technology for military vehicles.
An industry source told DANGER ROOM the announcement may have been postponed over concerns the losers will launch a protest. A lot is at stake here: the winner of the production contract stands to win orders for tens of thousands of vehicles. And protests have stalled major contract awards for aerial refueling tankers and a new combat search and rescue helo.
