Russia to deploy missile shield crushers
Future Russian nuclear-powered submarines will be equipped with Bulava nuclear missiles which can rip through 'any' missile defense barrier.
“A new state armaments program includes a plan to build a batch of eight nuclear submarines that would be armed with new Bulava strategic missiles,” deputy commander in chief of the Russian navy, Admiral Alexander Tatarinov was quoted by Interfax as saying.
Borei-class nuclear submarines, earmarked for carrying the missile will be operational in less than 10 years from now.
The move is part of Moscow's plans to fatten up its nuclear deterrent which, along with the submarines, would boast a space defense system by the end of the next 12 years.
"A guaranteed nuclear deterrent system for various military and political circumstances must be provided by 2020," President Dmitry Medvedev was quoted by Ria Novosti as saying last Friday.
The blitz on the firepower serves the purpose of 'modernization' of the country's armed forces which is to go off the ground in view of the recent confrontation between Russia and Georgia which, on August 7, attacked its independence-leaning republic of South Ossetia threatening the lives of the Russian peacekeepers and nationals there.
The measure, as well, is widely seen as a precaution taken against the United States which Russia accuses of having orchestrated the conflict.
"The fact is that US citizens were indeed in the area in conflict during the hostilities…following direct orders from their leaders," said Russian Premier Vladimir Putin in late August.
The deterrent could also match a similar one; Washington has been lobbying Poland and the Czech Republic to partially station in their soil under the title of a missile defense shield.
US has had a hard time persuading the respective nations to install the components of the shield which, the Russian Premier Vladimir Putin claims, is penetrable by the Bulava missiles capable of shattering 'any' defense shield.
In an interview with the Press TV, On August 15, Russian political analyst Victor Nadein Raevskiy spoke against the US' claim that the plan was meant to head off possible attacks from Iran saying "Iran does not have missiles that could reach that far…, off course, it is some kind of protection against Russian rockets."
The US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, however, responded to the last-Friday announcement of the pending enhancement saying "the balance of power in terms of nuclear deterrence is not going to be affected by those measures."
She added that the US nuclear deterrent was 'capable' and 'robust.

I guess that will give our sub's something to do again.

There is an article in the Wash Post today detailing the economic, demographic and health problems inside Russia. Even with oil well above 100 per for the next decade, they can't possibly support the military build up they are talking about. They aren't even spending enough now to fully maintain the crumbling military they have currently.
But Will, we can dream right. Don't kill the dream of once again being a major player on the world stage. Besides the Russians don't actually have to have anything, they can just claim it and some people will run to appease then and treat them like a world power.
Why waste all that money when you can just fake it.
