Kurdish rebels open fire on Turkish troops from Iraq

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) - Iraq-based Kurdish rebels, armed with long-range weapons, have fired on Turkish soldiers guarding the frontier, Turkey's military said Friday.
The military said Turkish troops «retaliated heavily» against the rebels, who maintain camps in northern Iraq.
No one was killed or injured in the fire fight, which took place Thursday, the military said in a statement posted on its Web site Friday.

The conflict between autonomy-seeking Kurdish guerrillas and the government forces has claimed the lives of tens of thousands of people since the guerrillas took up arms in 1984.
Turkish military launched a ground assault against Kurdish rebel camps inside Iraq in February and there have been sporadic clashes along the border and inside Turkey since then.

On Thursday, the military said troops had killed 13 Kurdish rebels in separate clashes in eastern Turkey. It did not say when the clashes took place, but anti-rebel operations have been under way in the region since last weekend.
