Fidel's resignation

Jeffrey asked:

"Hey, how about a response to Castro's resignation?"

Well I think that the best way to categorize the response I am seeing here in South Florida is anti-climatic.
I mean there's nothing really new here. He had already passed the reigns of power to his brother Raul. So we are I think more interested now with what Raul will do than with Fidel. There has been a lot of talk about changes coming from the Raul administration, allot of it sounding more like hype than any real change, but there is some hope. The rumors say that Raul will initiate a "China" model. Opening up the economy and allowing for trade, and letting more information from the outside, and maybe even allowing Cubans to travel outside the country for the first time. But at the moment that is all talk. There is little more than hope that he will in fact come through with any of his so-called reforms. The fact that Fidel did officially resign does open the door a little bit for any reforms Raul might have in mind, but just a little.

Then there is the fact that waiting in the wings are a bunch of the inner circle people that might want a hand at the helm. Many of these being even worse prospects for reform. Some of the most dogmatic communist you might even want to meet in a dark ally. So not much to cheer for on that front.

In the area of the general public on the island we have the potential for another boat lift, or mass immigration. I think that the officials here in Miami are tying to prepare for such and event. The Coast Guard and the other Federal agencies are making preparation to interdict any mass migration at sea so they can be returned to Cuba. I can assure you this policy will not be popular here on the ground. Specially if there is any violence to force fleeing refugees to return home.

So over all there is not really a lot of light coming through right now from the long tunnel that is the crisis that is Cuba.

I have been listening around for any mention that any of the opposition groups might take this opportunity to strike out and try to ferment "rebellion" on the island, but I can see no evidence at all that anything is in the works. They are just sitting on their hands.
I advocate a much more proactive approach...But I am in the vast minority.
