Iraq and Russia in oil-for-debt talks

Iraq has offered to help Russia's oil and gas companies in Iraq if Moscow abrogates 80 percent of Baghdad's Soviet-era debt.

Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari has said Russian oil and gas producers are welcome in Iraq where the government will grant them significant advantages.

Iraq owes Russia Soviet-era debt worth US$13 billion.

Zebari said his country did not feel over-burdened by contracts signed by the previous Russian regime and had found Russia to be understanding on the issue of settling the debts.
