Diggers return fire in Iraq

Australian soldiers have been attacked with machine guns and a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) launcher while on patrol in Iraq's Dhi Qar province.

The Defence Department says gunmen fired at the Overwatch Battle Group - West soldiers over the weekend.

An RPG which hit the armour of their Australian Light Armoured Vehicle (ASLAV) failed to detonate and machine gun rounds bounced off the armour.

The attackers fled when Australian soldiers returned fire.

No soldiers were injured.
