Who is joining the military these days?

Not many surprises for people who actually deal with Soldiers, but I'm sure this sort of information would come as a huge surprise to the junior senator from Mass. if he bothered to do any research before opening his mouth."

This report is a whitewash. Nix the statistics for all the branches except the Army. Everyone knows that the Navy and Air Force are removed from combat, so their recruiting levels haven't really been effected. The Marine Corps only needs a few good recruits and they can afford to be selective.

Income, race and region have zero bearing on the quality of soldier that can be created from a recruit, so nix those as well. Education levels and moral factors are what you need to look at.

I know for a fact that the number of high school dropouts has more than doubled and the number of cat4 recruits has quadrupled since the start of the war. It's hard to say how many more moral waivers are being granted, but I know just from discussions with recruiters that it's increased quite a bit as well.

There have been many recruiting standards lowered, such as age, education, morality and aptitude. It's going to have an effect. The effect will become exaggerated over time as these people rise through the ranks and those more qualified attrit.

If you don't believe this stuff has an effect, look at Abu Ghraib and try to estimate the massive effect that debacle has had on the war effort. I guarantee you that Lynndie England was a cat4 recruit.

The article states that the military defines a high quality recruit as someone who scores in the top fiftieth percentile. That's bull. The Army defines the high quality recruits as Catagory 1 and that's why the category system exists. Category 2 is above average. Category 3 is average. Category 4s are not the people you want watching your back.

You really should investigate these articles before posting. Spreading misinformation is a terrible disservice to your fellow blogizens.
