Stryker members return to Alaska cheers
FAIRBANKS -- The first of returning soldiers from the 172nd Stryker Brigade arrived in Alaska Saturday to the cheers of family and friends.
Friends and family gathered at Fort Wainwright near Fairbanks to welcome 313 members of the brigade who have served an extended tour in Iraq. Another 200 Stryker soldiers arrived at Fort Richardson near Anchorage.
An additional 300 soldiers were expected to arrive in Fairbanks later Saturday.
Brigade members will be arriving each day until Dec. 6, according to Army officials.
Most of the 3,800 soldiers will be returning to Fort Wainwright, where the brigade is stationed.
The soldiers are returning after 16 months in Iraq. They served their first year in northern Iraq, then their tour was extended another four months to help quell violence in Baghdad.
