Kennedy says U.S. troops face mission impossible in Iraq
The current 'stay the course' strategy in Iraq is a failed strategy and the American people know it, Senator Ted Kennedy said Monday.
'The Bush Administration hid its reasons for going to war behind phony evidence and cherry-picked intelligence. That dishonesty, combined with the Administration's incompetence in planning for the war, has left our troops in Iraq with Mission Impossible -- and our soldiers continue to pay for it with their lives,' he said.
Kennedy slammed the Republican Congress, which he called a 'rubber stamp' for not standing up to the administration. He has called on the American people to force a change in Iraq by changing Congress.
'The bloodletting in Iraq shows no sign of ebbing. Recent weeks have brought warnings that the situation may soon be even worse. Both our top general in the region and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff told Congress they see a high risk that what was called the 'liberation' of Iraq could soon become an all-out civil war.'
'Just last week,' said Kennedy, 'President Bush responded to the generals' warning with this amazing statement: 'You know, I hear people say, well, civil war this, civil war that. The Iraqi people decided against civil war.''
'That dangerous denial of reality tells us what we need to know: changing course in Iraq can happen only if we change Congress,' he said.
'Even after all these obvious warnings, President Bush continues to whistle past the graveyard. He'll keep on whistling as long as his Rubber Stamp Republican Congress is there to ratify his failed strategy.'
