Holbrooke to Bush: Deploy Troops to Northern Iraq

Washington’s former UN ambassador Richard Holbrooke suggested the Bush administration deploy American troops to northern Iraq.

Former Assistant Secretary of State and initiator of Bosnian peace, Holbrooke published an article in the Washington Post highlighting that Turkey is ready to enter northern Iraq to fight against the Kurdistan Workers Party.

“For starters, Bush should redeploy some U.S. troops into the safer northern areas of Iraq to serve as a buffer between the increasingly agitated Turks and the restive, independence-minded Kurds. Given the new situation, such a redeployment is fully justified,” Holbrooke said.

He added developments in the Middle East recall those of pre-World War I, and cautioned against a new world war, in which Turkey might also join.

Holbrooke further warned the U.S. government to be ready against “unexpected problems” likely to occur in Turkey, Pakistan, Egypt, Syria, Jordan, and Somalia.
