British troops seize Iraq weapons

British troops in Iraq have withstood an attack by insurgents to uncover a two-tonne haul of "terrorist" weapons, according to the Army.
It followed a dawn raid and included bomb-making equipment, rockets and mortars, the Ministry of Defence said.

The find was made by soldiers from the southern multinational force during a planned operation in a Basra suburb.

The MoD said troops came under attack from mortar rounds and small arms fire. Three people have been detained.

No British soldiers were injured.

An spokesman added that rocket propelled grenades were also used in the attack.

He said the weaponry was seized by soldiers from 20th Armoured Brigade, led by the 2nd Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment, adding that it "represents an extremely significant find".

Brigadier James Everard, Commander 20th Armoured Brigade, said: "The operation was intelligence-based, well-planned and highly successful in achieving the objective.

"Multinational forces will combat the threat from terrorists and this is an example of the measures we will take to meet our commitment."
