Al-Sadr condemns Maliki's visit to US

Followers of radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr today condemned the visit of Prime Minister Nouri Maliki to the United States because it could lead to a continued US presence in Iraq.

“We want him to cut his visit and not to sign any paper leading to occupation forces remaining in Iraq,” the statement by the al-Sadr movement said.

Maliki left yesterday for talks in Washington this week with President George Bush to discuss sectarian violence, which has risen sharply since Iraq’s national unity government took office two months ago.

The statement from al-Sadr’s supporters said they see the visit “as a vague and empty sign, especially since it occurred as security deteriorated in the country”.

Al-Sadr’s followers hold 30 of the 275 seats in parliament and control five Cabinet ministries including health, transportation and agriculture.
