Professionals flee Iraq fearing violence

"BAGHDAD, Iraq (UPI) -- With the growing insurgency in Iraq, an increasing number of professionals are fleeing the country, making the reconstruction task even more difficult.

The problem is that shadowy political groups have targeted doctors, lawyers, professors and businessmen for kidnapping, ransom and even death, reports The Washington Post.

'I think it`s part of the plan for the country`s destruction,' Dr. Omar Kubasi, Iraq`s most noted cardiologist, told The Post by telephone from Jordan, where he has fled. 'The situation in the last six months has gotten so bad, we couldn`t continue.'

He left Baghdad in May after he and nine other doctors received letters telling them they would be killed if they did not stop working in Iraq.

The Post report said so many professionals have fled that Iraq is in danger of losing the core of skilled people it needs most just as it tries to build a newly independent society. Those with resources go to Jordan, Syria, and Egypt or to Western countries if they have visas. Those left behind feel abandoned."

This story seems to validate just what TT of Citizen of Mosul has been telling us.

I of course know that the US is not targeting members of academia in Iraq. But the fact remains that they are a prime target of various gangs, thugs, militias, and clerical organizations, and what not. This was predictable, and the Bush administration was warned before the war that this would happen. In this limited sense they are complicit, just like they are complicit in the loss of the artifacts from the museum and the damage to the archeological sites. There defense that there were not enough troops is stupid in the face of everyone telling them that they needed more troops, and Bermer requesting more troops, and being denied. no one can do everything but some things were and are preventable.

I've never been to Salt Lake city, but I'll keep your warning in mind if I ever have a need.
