John Lennon, 1940-1980
"Twenty five years ago John Lennon was shot not far from where I sit writing, almost at the corner of Central Park and West 72nd Street, at the entry gate of his apartment building, the Dakota. Today, there will be a lot of candles burning away in the winter chill in a tribute to his musical genius, his artistry and his memory.I am not going to write from the musical stand point or from the trenches of trivia. Instead, I will tell you about the meaning John Lennon had for people like KillCastro and Charlie Bravo. As y’all know, we were born in Havana and spent our formative years there. In our time, it was punishable by law to own a record of music that was not considered kosher by the government. Just try to imagine that for a second, the legislative forces of the United States employing tax money to decide, control, and enforce a restrictive policy on what can of music Americans can listen to. Well, that’s Cuba for you!"
