Iraq calls U.S. flares chemical weapons

"FALLUJAH, Iraq, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- The U.S. military's use of phosphorus illumination flares in Iraq constituted a chemical attack, a documentary by Italy's state broadcaster claimed Tuesday.

The film by RAI focused on the major counter-insurgency offensive U.S. troops staged on the city of Fallujah in November of last year.

A former U.S. soldier who fought there said soldiers were warned to be careful, as the white phosphorus flares known as "Willy Pete" in military jargon would be used at Fallujah, The Independent reported."
