Iraq charter talks 'breakthrough'

"One of Iraq's main Sunni Arab parties will endorse the country's new constitution in Saturday's crucial referendum, a spokesman has said.
Ayad Sammarai, of the Iraqi Islamic party, said Shia and Kurdish leaders have agreed to review the charter after elections in December.

Iraqi political leaders have been negotiating for weeks to try to secure Sunni backing for the constitution.

Many Sunnis opposed the draft, fearing it could lead to the break-up of Iraq.

Meanwhile more than 50 people died in continuing violence in Iraq on Tuesday.

'Sunni veto'

Mr Sammarai told AFP news agency: "There was an agreement and we are calling for a 'yes' vote" in the referendum."
