U.N. Security Council Extends Iraq Mission

"UNITED NATIONS (AP) - The Security Council voted unanimously Thursday to extend the U.N. mission in Iraq, reaffirming its leading role in helping to promote a national dialogue which is crucial for the country's political stability and unity.

The resolution, sponsored by the United States, also calls on the United Nations to assist the Iraqi people and government in developing institutions for representative government.

Earlier this month, Secretary-General Kofi Annan sent a letter to the council recommending a 12-month extension of the U.N. mission, whose current mandate expires on Aug. 12.

There are now 260 civilians and military working for the United Nations in Iraq."
