Iraq's Microwave Democracy
"In a recent conference held in Istanbul under the title of "Democratization and Security in The Wider Middle East" sponsored by the Ari Movement, I labeled Iraq as a case of a "Microwave Democracy."
A microwave is an oven where after you set the timer for one minute, it cooks food at accelerated speeds, but destroys the taste of a meal. I would argue that Iraq is pursuing democracy at a microwave oven's pace. The "timer" for Iraq to assume sovereignty was set on June 28, 2004, a few months later, it held elections on January 30, 2005 and an interim assembly will have to rush to write a constitution by October 2005, to be voted on by the Iraqi public. The question remains can Iraq serve as a successful democratic model for the Arab World if its own democracy is rushed in an imperfect fashion?"
